Lazaro Alvarez | Race Director
In 2012, the Irving Marathon was founded by Lazaro Alvarez and Ronnie Chesko, the vision was to give back to the community and showcase Irving/Las Colinas as a place with beautiful scenic running routes. At 13, Lazaro Alvarez moved from El Salvador to Irving where he ran track and cross country at Austin Middle School and Irving High School. He attended Schreiner University where he double majored in political science and international business. Schreiner did not have a running team, during his sophomore year, he helped start the University's first cross-country team. After College he moved back to Irving where a running community did not exist, with the help of social media he started the Irving Running Club, and a few weeks later the Irving Marathon was born. Lazaro and Ronnie enlisted the help of many of their high school friends to get the project started. Professionally, Lazaro has excelled in many of his roles including being the top sales person and later top sales manager at AT&T Mobility for multiple years. He was then recruited as an Account Executive for Clear Channel outdoor, for an advertising sales position in out of home advertising. His last role before leaving the corporate world to dedicate 100% of his attention to the Irving Marathon was a Territory Sales Executive for Western Union. With the support of the community, Irving Marathon’s five year vision is to be a 20,000+ participant running event in DFW and become one of the nation’s premiere running events. Lazaro serves in the Board of Directors for Irving/Las Colinas Rotary & Baylor Scott & White Irving Foundation. Lazaro also serves as an Ambassador for the Irving/Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce.
